HONOLULU — State health officials said another food service worker is among the more than 250 people who have tested positive for Hepatitis A.
The Hawaii Department of Health said Tuesday that the infected worker is an employee of Harbor Restaurant at Pier 38. The risk of contracting the disease at the business is low, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported (http://bit.ly/2cDU5z3).
The worker had been on the job as recently as Monday. Officials are warning those who ate at the restaurant from Aug. 26 to Sept. 12 to contact their health providers.
The outbreak has been linked to frozen scallops served raw by a popular sushi chain, Genki Sushi. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests later found hepatitis A in the scallops, which were imported from the Philippines.
There were 252 confirmed Hepatitis A cases as of last week. The health department is expected to update the count Wednesday.
“Because of the long incubation period for hepatitis A, we are continuing to see new cases of this illness even after identifying and removing contaminated scallops from Hawaii restaurants, and individuals exposed in July and August may become ill as late as September or October,” said Dr. Sarah Park, state epidemiologist.
Park stressed that the latest case does not mean there is a new outbreak or that the restaurant is a source of the ongoing outbreak.
