LOS ANGELES — A Southern California woman faces charges for allegedly helping her husband flee the United States after he pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry following his deportation in a criminal case.

Federal prosecutors say 36-year-old Elba Soto was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact for driving her husband to Mexico so he could avoid being sentenced.

Soto’s husband, Jose Guadalupe Vega-Zuniga, pleaded guilty last month, admitting that he had previously been convicted of drug trafficking and assault with a deadly weapon. He was also found guilty in 2000 of being in the United States illegally — and had been deported four times since.

An arraignment for Soto is scheduled for Oct. 19. It wasn’t immediately known if she has an attorney.
