AUBURN, Maine — A Maine woman has been indicted on charges she defrauded at least a dozen victims out of more than $150,000.
The Portland Press Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2cpM6Cr ) Tanya Boutelle is charged with theft by deception, theft by unauthorized taking or transfer and tampering with a victim. Officials say most of the victims were elderly.
The state Department of Health and Human Services says the Androscoggin County woman also failed to report her income to the state and received more than $3,700 in welfare benefits she wasn’t entitled.
Authorities say Boutelle established relationships with the victims and created scenarios for needing to borrow money from them, but never paid them back. She’s also accused of stealing from the some of the victims’ homes.
A phone number listed for Boutelle wasn’t in service.
