AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police say an armed man suspected of trying to break into vehicles has been fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with officers.

Police say the man died early Thursday at an Austin hospital. No officers were hurt.

Chief of Staff Brian Manley says officers Wednesday night responded to a call about a suspicious man in an apartment complex parking lot. Officers searched but couldn’t locate him.

Manley says dispatchers received a second call reporting the man was back. Police located the man, who ran. Police chased the suspect and one officer used a Taser to try to subdue the suspect.

Manley says the suspect was ordered to show his hands, but pulled a gun and opened fire. Two officers shot him.

Both officers will go on administrative duty.
