BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. — The police chief of a small Mississippi town who shot himself last week after being suspended has been laid to rest.

The Sun-Herald newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/2d3hGXv ) Friday that Bay St. Louis Police Chief Mike De Nardo was laid to rest Thursday.

Hundreds of people turned out for his funeral, including fellow law enforcement officials, retired military, friends, family and city residents.

The city’s fire department positioned a fire truck near Main Street with an American flag hanging from the truck’s ladder.

De Nardo died Sept. 8 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials have said the police chief was being investigated over allegations he illegally sold city-owned firearms and committed payroll fraud.

After being suspended, he went to the station’s parking lot and shot himself.
