GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A grand jury has determined that the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old Gainesville boy by police was justified.

The Gainesville Sun (http://bit.ly/2cfqDjn) reports that the Alachua County grand jury said no criminal charges were warranted in the death of Robert Dentmond on March 20.

The high school student was shot after he called 911 and reported he was suicidal and had a gun.

Police responded to an apartment complex, and after a 30-minute standoff, Dentmond put down a replica gun he was holding.

Police say Dentmond then picked the gun back up and backed away, ignoring orders from the officers to drop the replica firearm. He was fatally shot, and bullets also struck nearby apartments in the complex.

The grand jury is not finished with its inquiry.
