PHOENIX — Authorities say an inmate at the state prison in Buckeye is dead and it appears to be a suicide.

Arizona Department of Corrections officials say 31-year-old Pete Perales was found unresponsive in his assigned housing location Saturday at the Lewis prison complex “from an apparent act of self-harm.”

Details weren’t immediately released Monday.

Corrections officials say prison staff performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, but Perales died.

They say Perales was sentenced to six years in prison out of Maricopa County for aggravated DUI and flight from law enforcement.

Corrections officials say all inmate deaths are investigated in consultation with the county medical examiner’s office.
