• Columbus Police Department for a quick response on Ninth Street Monday, from a Ninth Street resident.

• Brock, the little boy in River Grove subdivision, for brightening our Sunday with his unexpected gift and precious smile, from the Mathis family.

• St. Bartholomew families, teachers, parishioners and staff for their support, volunteer hours, 2-liters of soda, baked goods and creative Fun Jars donated for the kids at Saturday’s Fall Festival, from the St. Bartholomew PTO.

• Kirby Rupp for your kindness and thinking of us, from Erin and Aaron Miller.

• Michele Bottorff and her crew for the fantastic Steps Through Time event and for all Michele did to help make the bicentennial celebration come together.

• the wonderful young people of the River Grove subdivision for spreading kindness and their parents for encouraging them.

• Love Chapel for giving my brother another chance.

• the political Paula Rothrock sign on Midway Street, telling it like it is.

• Mr. Baker and Brian at Columbus City Utilities for checking out the water line in the rain, from Emily.

• Lincoln Square Family Restaurant for delicious food and excellent service.

• Bud Herron for carrying the torch in the Bicentennial Relay in memory of Larry Simpson, from family and friends.

• Rally’s, Aunt Millie’s Bakery, Bob Evan’s, Auto Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, Ahlemeyer Bakery, Scooter’s, the McGuire’s, Kim Howe and Beth Dilly for making our block party successful, from the State Street Association.

• Emery, Brent and the Historic Downtown Neighborhood Alliance for braving the rainy weather to put on a nice sale on Saturday, from your neighbors.

• the 100 outstanding fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from Bartholomew County in DAR Bicentennial Children’s Choir that sang Sunday at the library plaza and to their parents and teachers for supporting them, from the DAR choir director.

• the dedicated Philharmonic volunteers and board members who helped usher, take tickets, greet guests and everything else.

• Harrison Lake Country Club for providing a beautiful setting and excellent food and service for the Reeve’s 50th anniversary party, from the Skinners, Stadlers and Hiaths.

• Ann Hedrick, Barb and Ed Johnson, the Hartsville fire department, the committees and everyone who helped with the wonderful Hartsville bicentennial celebration, from the Hartsville Methodist Women.

Onions to …

• anyone that can’t see the beauty of a 70-year-old still seeing his wife as “his girl.”

• people who hire a lawyer and blame somebody else when the person to blame is the one who broke the law.

• Columbus for not having an iced tea festival for those of us that don’t drink beer.

• the restaurant that does not have enough wait staff, hostesses, cashiers, etc. and provided extremely poor service last Saturday.

• people who won’t let the police do their jobs, which is to protect the citizens.

• the grandparents for letting their grandson play with the condiment cups at the restaurant.

• people who put their shrub and tree trimmings in the alley instead of along the street where the city will pick them up.

• the soccer coach who holds class at his house when the fields are closed due to rain.

• The Republic for publishing police reports almost a week late.

• the driver on County Road 550N who deliberately accelerated, making it difficult to pass and endangering lives.

• the nursing facility that did not have my personal belongings packed and made me pack them myself.

• the horribly annoying training Saturday night, ruining the evening.

• the people in the subdivision on the east side of town who let their dog stay outside whining instead of taking care of it.

• the lady who sits on her porch and talks so loud on her phone everybody in the neighborhood can hear her.
