Cummins Midrange Engine Plant’s assembly line was closed five days in response to a production shutdown by DaimlerChrysler.

1991

The Indiana Department of Transportation reported that the condition of the U.S. 31 overpass at Indiana 11 north of Columbus continued to deteriorate at an alarming rate, and urged replacement of the structure as soon as possible. The bridge, built in 1941 and extensively repaired in 1967, carried more than 16,000 vehicles into and out of Columbus each day.

Spc. Fourth Class Jerry Wayne Downs, 21, became the first Bartholomew County native to be killed in action in Vietnam.
