Update: 1 dead in accident on Interstate 65; southbound lanes reopen; video from scene

Update: Police report that Interstate 65 has opened.

An adult woman has died in a three-vehicle accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65, Indiana State Police said.

The state police, Columbus police and firefighters are working at the scene on Interstate 65 near the State Road 46 exit at Columbus that happened at about noon.

A tanker truck has rear-ended a pickup truck which was then pushed into the back of a semi, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police spokesman. Two additional victims in the pickup truck were also trapped and have been transported to the hospital by Lifeline helicopter, Indiana State Police said.

211571 Four ambulances have been called to the scene and Columbus Township and Columbus firefighters are working at the accident scene.

At least two wreckers were used to pry the two semis apart in order to free the victims.

Columbus police have shut down I-65 at the accident scene and traffic is being diverted on to State Road 46. Traffic is also being diverted at the 76 mile marker to U.S. 31.
