At about 8 a.m., Columbus police were alerted that there was a remote-controlled aircraft flying above Washington Street. Officers quickly located the operator, who was standing along nearby Jackson Street, according to witnesses.

“We simply asked him if he could put it away for the safety of the runners and spectators,” ColumbusĀ Police Department spokesman Lt. Matt Harris said.

Although one spectator said the small plane was brought down on Washington Street, Harris said he was unable to confirm that account. However, the incident did not interfere with the event, the police spokesman said.

A law enforcement officer working the Mill Race Marathon was struck by a vehicle. The Indiana State Police trooper was hit near the intersection of State and Mapleton streets shortly before 8:30 a.m., Harris said. While the officer was taken by ambulance to Columbus Regional Hospital, his leg injuries are believed to be minor, Harris added. The trooper’s name has not been released at this time.
