Patrick Clerkin

Columbus

Patrick “Pat” Lee Clerkin, of Columbus, Indiana, died Sunday, September 18, 2016. He was born April 26, 1954 in Seymour, Indiana, to the late Robert and Violet “Vicky” Clerkin.

Pat attended St. Bartholomew and St. Columba Catholic Elementary schools and graduated from Columbus High School. He was very musically inclined and taught himself to play studio-quality banjo, guitar and fiddle by ear. He particularly loved bluegrass. A gifted artist, Pat won high school awards in painting and was the unofficial school artist for St. Columba School.

Pat lettered in football for the Columbus Bulldogs and went on to play for the Indianapolis Rams, a semipro football team where he was prized for his field goal and extra point scoring abilities.

In addition to his talent on the field, Pat was a devoted sports fan. He loved the Columbus Bulldogs, the Indiana Hoosiers and the Harlem Globetrotters. He could quote statistics from the Bulldogs 1960’s Stearman glory teams by heart, and seldom missed attending area appearances of the Globetrotters with his mother. Pat shared his father’s love for Corvair Corsas and enjoyed owning several classic American muscle cars.

Pat was a gentle soul and he will be greatly missed. Pat is preceded in death by his parents and nephew Eric Baker.

Pat is survived by brothers, Robert Clerkin (Brenda) and Thomas Clerkin (Betty); and sisters, Christine Hardy (Oakel) and Susie Baker (Phil); 10 nieces and nephews; and 15 great-nieces and -nephews.

Pat was buried beside his parents at Garland Brook Cemetery with Father Clem Davis presiding over a private gathering of family. Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street was entrusted with the arrangements for Pat. Memorial donations may be made in Pat’s name to the Columbus North High School Booster Club.
