Marathon spectator: Pauline Schmidt

Tucked into a lawn chair at a water station along Rocky Ford Road, Pauline Schmidt looked like any of the other volunteers lining the marathon route at about the halfway point.

But Schmidt, who was diligently peeling clementines to be handed out to runners just as the race started, was a long way from home during Saturday’s Mill Race Marathon.

Schmidt is an exchange student from a community near Frankfurt, Germany, studying as a sophomore at South Decatur High School in Greensburg. She arrived in August.

The student was volunteering with her host family, Chris and Julie Blaich and their daughters, Shelby and Meghan.

“I like it. It’s a bigger town here. Everything is big here. Cars. Food. Everything.”
