Marathon volunteer: Matthew Rust

On a day when most people got from Point A to Point B on foot, Columbus resident Matthew Rust found himself on two wheels. It was no accident.

Rust is part of the marathon cycling volunteers team, whose job to to keep an eye out for the safety and welfare of Mill Race Marathon runners.

His specific assignment this year was to stay just behind the lead half marathon male runner. Last year, he followed — on his bicycle — the second-place half-marathon male runner.

Rust works at Kessler Investment Group, Columbus, and became involved as a cycling volunteer through the firm’s owner, Craig Kessler, who has had a leadership role among the volunteers.

“This is literally the highlight of my year,” said Rust, who explained that he is won over by the positive energy displayed by marathon participants.

“It’s fun to see people,” Rust said. “It’s just a good time.”
