Homecoming football tonight and Friday

Homecoming festivities are underway this week at Columbus East High School, including the big football game tonight.

On a Wednesday? Yes, if the football you are talking about is the powder puff variety among East High School girls

That’s at 6 p.m. today on Stafford Field.

Each of the four grade levels — freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior — will compete, playing against the other classes, with each team wearing its own special color of shirt.

The game, which is free, starts at 6 p.m., shortly after high school football practice wraps up, said Jeff Thomas, a social studies teacher and a student government co-sponsor.

The other big football game this week is the varsity contest against Madison, which starts at 7 p.m.

Students who are on the Homecoming Court will be introduced, with the king and queen being announced during halftime.

After the game, students have organized a homecoming party that will include music and games, Thomas said.

Tickets for the event, which will take place in the school’s auxiliary gym, can be purchased for $3 per person during lunchtime this week.

Students from other schools are permitted to attend as long as they have their student ID, Thomas said.

“With the student government kids just within the last few years, we’ve really handed them the reins with student government and let them plan everything,” Thomas said.

During this process, students have come up with good ideas on their own while developing as leaders and dealing with challenges as part of the planning process, he said.
