WESTPORT, Mass. — Massachusetts State Police say three people have died and several others were injured in a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 195 in Westport.

Police say a preliminary investigation found that a westbound livery minivan crossed the median just after 8 a.m. Wednesday and hit an eastbound BMW head-on. A third vehicle then struck the BMW and caught fire. Two other vehicles were damaged.

Two people in the livery vehicle died. A third occupant was taken to the hospital. One occupant of the BMW, identified as a 24-year-old New Bedford woman, was killed. Two other people, including a toddler, were taken to hospitals.

No names have been released.

The eastbound side of I-195 was closed, and the left lane of the westbound side was closed during the investigation.

This story has been updated to correct the directions in which the vehicles were traveling and to show that additional vehicles were involved per state police.
