North student injured in hit-and-run accident

A Columbus North High School student was injured in a hit-and-run accident when returning to school from lunch.

Marvin Gates, a senior, was treated and released from Columbus Regional Hospital on Tuesday, police said. Initial reports were that Gates suffered a leg injury in the incident at about 11:49 a.m. that day.

Police said Gates was crossing 25th Street from Home Avenue on foot when he was struck by a silver Mazda Miata traveling east in front of the school. There are conflicting reports whether the student had the “walk” signal at the crosswalk at the time he was hit, police said.

The car that hit Gates left the scene, but a description was relayed to police by North’s school resource officer to Columbus police and the vehicle was located before 3 p.m., police said.

Police have cited the driver, 20-year-old Wesley Meyers, Columbus, with failure to stop for an accident, said officer Justin Black, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
