NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Authorities in Newport News say a man who escaped from the city jail’s booking area is back in custody at the jail.

Newport News Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dottie Wikan said in an email that 21-year-old Daniel Panton called police Wednesday morning to say he wanted to turn himself in and officers arrested him.

Wikan says Panton was arrested on grand larceny-shoplifting and possession of burglary tool charges on Tuesday. She says Panton was handcuffed to a bench while waiting to be processed in the jail’s booking area Tuesday evening when he escaped.

Wikan says it’s not yet clear how Panton escaped, but an internal investigation has been launched to figure that out.
