FRANCONIA, N.H. — A hiker from Florida who sustained serious head and neck injuries along a trail in Franconia required rescue by New Hampshire Fish and Game officials.

WMUR-TV reports ( ) Fish and Game was notified of 60-year-old John Evans’ injury on the Falling Waters Trail at about 3:35 p.m. Thursday.

The Jacksonville, Florida man fell and hurt his head and neck approximately 2 miles from the trailhead. Evans and his wife had hiked to Shining Rock and were descending the trail when he fell.

An Army National Guard helicopter was called by Fish and Game officials to assist in the rescue. A medic was lowered onto the trail and Evans was hoisted into the helicopter just before 7 p.m.

Evans was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment. His condition is unknown.
