NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities say a Newark mother and her live-in boyfriend have been charged in the death of her 7-year-old son.

Essex County prosecutors say 29-year-old city resident Christopher Spearman and 28-year-old Khadejrah Rawls were each charged Monday with child endangerment. Spearman also faces an aggravated assault count. It wasn’t known if either one has retained an attorney.

The charges stem from the death of Michael Moore Jr. The child was found unresponsive Sunday morning at a North Munn Avenue home and died a short time later at a hospital.

A cause of death has not been determined.

Four other children, all younger than Moore, and three pit bull puppies were also found in the home. The children are now in the care of child protective services.

This story has been corrected to show that the child was 7 years old, not 8 years old.
