Homeowner alerts police to attempted burglary reported by security camera

Columbus police arrested a local man after a homeowner got an alert from her home security camera that a man was attempting to break into her home with a crowbar.

Police were sent to the 1000 block of Central Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. Monday about a burglary in progress, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

When police arrived, the man, later identified as Barry L. Williams, 48, 3653 Candel Place, Columbus, fled on foot, Harris said. Officers found Williams after he jumped into Haw Creek near Seventh Street and Central Avenue.

Police found a crowbar stuck in a rear door frame of the Central Avenue home, Harris said.

Williams was arrested on preliminary charges of felony burglary and criminal mischief and is being held without bond in the Bartholomew County Jail, jail officials said.
