ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis judge has ordered a new election in a city race after finding that absentee ballots were improperly cast.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch ( ) reports Circuit Judge Julian Bush’s ruling Tuesday sets up the Nov. 8 special election between Fifth Ward Democratic Committeeman Rodney Hubbard Sr. and Rasheen Aldridge.

While Aldridge got more votes the day of the Aug. 2 election, Hubbard won on the basis of absentee ballots cast. Committeemen typically direct party activities but hold no public authority.

Tuesday’s ruling follows a judge’s order of a do-over election involving Hubbard’s wife and questioned absentee ballots in a state House race. Penny Hubbard defeated fellow Democrat Bruce Franks in August, getting nearly 80 percent of the absentee ballots. But Franks last month won the do-over election.
