MALIBU, Calif. — A security guard at a Malibu residence shot a trespasser who had stabbed him in the face, authorities said.

The two got into a struggle after the guard confronted the intruder at about 11 a.m. on the property near Encinal Canyon Road, said Sgt. James Braden of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Braden added that the home’s residents were not on the property at the time.

He said the guard shot the trespasser three or four times.

Authorities couldn’t immediately say who owns the home. It is listed in a private trust and the owners’ names were not available.

The guard was still being treated for his wounds Friday night, Braden said, adding authorities hadn’t had an opportunity interview him.

The intruder was taken to a hospital.

His condition was not immediately available, but neither person’s wounds were believed to be life-threatening.
