Fall: time to think about recycling

Welcome, fall! The weather is finally cooling down, and as the evenings get colder the leaves start to fall. Start planning now for what to do with your yard waste.

The Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District has a yard waste disposal site for all residents of Columbus and Bartholomew County. This site is located behind the Recycling Center and City Garage at 720 S. Mapleton St. in Columbus.

Compostable material accepted at the lower level yard waste site:

Grass clippings

Leaves

Garden waste

Flowers

Tree fruit

Sod and dirt

Thatch

Weeds

Mulch/grinding materials accepted at the upper level yard waste site:

Tree trimmings

Pine cones

Corn stalks

Woody vines

Rose bushes

Shrubs

Bushes

Brush

Sunflower stalks

Materials not accepted in the yard waste site:

Tree roots

Limbs greater than 8 feet in length

Stumps greater than 36 inches in diameter

Bagged yard waste

Lumber

Trash

Free mulch, compost

While supplies last, Bartholomew County residents (city or county) may self-load mulch and/or compost at no cost.Friday loading programThe Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District offers mulch and compost loading to all Bartholomew County residents for $10 per pick-up truckload from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays from April through October. Stop at the solid waste office to pay before loading.
