LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas police say a man fatally shot his girlfriend as she was sitting in a car.

Police said Sunday that 27-year-old Ivan Cotton has been booked on one count of murder with a deadly weapon.

Officers were called Saturday evening to the area of Salernes Street and Shinnecock Hills Avenue.

They found Cotton standing outside a vehicle and a woman inside with gunshot wounds.

She was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Preliminary evidence indicates she had been sitting in the driver’s seat when she was shot.

Police say they also recovered a handgun at the scene.

According to investigators, the suspect and the victim had been in a relationship for the past year.

The Clark County coroner will release the victim’s identity.
