Marching bands taking next step

Marching band students from Columbus East and Columbus North high schools have advanced to the next rounds of Indiana State School Music Association competitions.

The Columbus East Olympian Spirit Marching Band will compete in Saturday’s ISSMA Scholastic Marching Band finals at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis. It will perform at 4:51 p.m.

East was one of the bands that received a gold rating Oct. 8 during Scholastic preliminaries at Whiteland Community High School, which qualified the group for Saturday’s finals.

Band director David Rodgers said his group has been making improvements since the Whiteland competition, and that he would be working with them this week to get them ready for Saturday’s Scholastic finals.

Meanwhile, Columbus North’s Sound of North Marching Band will compete in the ISSMA Open Class Semistate competition Saturday at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. It will perform at 4:02 p.m.

Sound of North scored among the top 10 bands during Saturday’s open class regional competition at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, earning “with distinction” honors for music, visuals and effects, assistant band director Keith Burton said.

Burton said his group’s strong weekend performance gives them encouragement moving forward.
