John Carl “Kirch” Kirchman, 61, of Columbus, died Friday, October 21, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family and loved ones.

John was born on Dec. 18, 1954, in Kankakee, Illinois, to parents Lawrence Kirchman and Betty (Maibauer) Kirchman. He grew up in Bradley, Illinois, and spent the majority of his career in Columbus, Indiana.

Surviving are his wife, Lisa (Bierwagen), whom he married on August 15, 1992, in Green Bay, Wisconsin; his three children and son-in-law, Kim and Travis Fox of Aurora, Colorado, Karen of Indianapolis and Sean of Columbus; his three grandchildren, Marinn, Lucy and Timothy; his three brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Darlyn of Marietta, Georgia, David and Jan of Lexington, South Carolina, and Mark and Sally of Parish, Florida; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Marilee and Warren Provost of Normal, Illinois, and Sr. Lori Kirchman, a member of the Springfield Dominican Sisters; his 14 nephews and nieces; and his 17 great-nephews and great-nieces.

John was preceded in death by his parents.

John was a U.S. Navy veteran, an alumnus of the University of Illinois, a long-time employee of Cummins, Inc. and a faithful member of St. Bartholomew. He was a highly regarded engineer, an incredible cook, an even better baker, an adept woodworker and a steadfast fan of the Chicago Bears, Bulls and Cubs.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 29 at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Andy Syberg officiating. Family and friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 27 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will be at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Unit and the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Bartholomew Catholic Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
