Rewards from running

HOPE — Two years ago, Brea Metz was feeling a little out of shape during volleyball season, and she knew the culprit.

Metz, who had ran track in middle school at North Decatur, didn’t compete in that sport her freshman year after transferring to Hauser. But she picked it up again her sophomore and junior years, and her volleyball game has been the beneficiary.

“I wasn’t feeling (track) because I didn’t like running,” Metz said. “Then, it really showed during volleyball season. So I started running, and I had never thrown before, so I started to throw (the shot and discus) and I loved it. Coach would be like, ‘Go to the weight room, or you can run,’ and I’d go to the weight room so I could get ready to throw. It was something that has definitely helped me on and off the court.”

Last year, Metz set the school record in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 4 inches. She also ran the  4×100-meter relay.

A four-year starter in volleyball, Metz ranks second on the school’s all-time kills list. She leads the Class A No. 4 Jets (32-3) with 378 kills this season.

Metz also ranks third on the team with 27 blocks and 54 aces and fifth with 129 digs. Hauser coach Jeff Case credits Metz’ success to her intensity and drive to do well.

“She’s a huge offensive weapon,” Case said. “She’s pretty athletic. She gets up and is really aggressive and has a real live arm. She brings the intensity that it takes to win.”

Metz, who plays club volleyball for Team Indiana, wants to play in college and go into nursing and dermatology. She has visited a few schools, but has yet to receive a scholarship offer.

Tonight, Hauser will host Greenwood Christian Academy in the regional round. The Jets won a regional title and went to the semistate finals Metz’ sophomore year and have won sectional championships each of her four years at Hauser.

“It’s a feeling that not many people get experience,” Metz said. “Being here at Hauser is just amazing, and getting that experience and that rush every year is awesome. I came into this season hoping we’d do as well as we did last year, and we have, and I feel we’re going to do a lot better than that, too.”
