City trail projects looming

A pair of trail projects in Columbus are expected to get underway next year and provide more accessibility for the public.

Dave Hayward, executive director of public works/city engineer, told the Board of Works this week that the city is working with the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. on its Safe Routes to School project that will extend the Blackwell trail to Richards and Parkside elementary schools. Bids are expected to be opened in February, with the project expected to start by late spring or early summer, Hayward said.

He said a majority of the cost would be paid through federal funding.

The city also plans to start work in late spring on a separate project tied to the Haw Creek Trail that will extend the path below 25th Street. Bids for that work are also expected to be opened in February, Hayward said.
