Driver arrested after chasing moped during trick-or-treating

Columbus police arrested a local man for reckless driving after he hit a telephone pole while chasing a moped during trick-or-treat hours near Indiana Avenue and Cleveland Street.

Daniel S. Roberts, 29, 412 Smith St., was arrested on preliminary charges of reckless driving, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, criminal recklessness with a vehicle and operating a vehicle without a license, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Police were sent to find a white car driving recklessly and chasing a moped at about 5:45 p.m. Monday, while children were in the area for trick-or-treating, Harris said. Witnesses told police the white car hit a telephone pole while chasing the moped, Harris said.

Officers stopped the white car and determined Roberts didn’t have a driver’s license and had a controlled substance that had not been prescribed for him, Harris said.

Roberts was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was released after posting $15,000 bond, jail officials said.
