William G. “Bill” Elwood, 82, of Columbus, died at 1:55 a.m. November 10, 2016, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.

Bill was born March 15, 1934, in New Castle, Indiana, the son of Marion Lee and Mollie Boone Elwood.

He was a Vietnam War veteran, retiring as Senior Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service in the United States Navy.

After retiring from the military, he was a real estate agent, Vice President of Lee’s Inns of America Inc. and a facilities manager for Elwood Staffing.

Bill was a member of First United Methodist Church and frequently visited Mill Race Center. He was a good son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, November 14, 2016, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Boles officiating. Calling will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Disabled American Veterans or any religious charity of the donor’s choice.

Survivors include his daughters, Karen Chavis of Columbus and Janice Childers of Alabama; a brother, Dr. David Elwood and sister-in-law, Ella Elwood of Columbus; grandchildren, Emily Salinas, Elizabeth Salinas, Ryan Chavis and Thomas Chavis; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lura J. Elwood, September 3, 1999; second wife, Julie Dasher Elwood, July 5, 2006; son, David Lee Elwood; daughter, Brenda Salinas; brothers, Raymond Elwood and Riley Burchfield; and sister, Helen Haun.
