John H. Whiteman, 64, of Westport, passed away at 5:52 p.m. Friday, November 11, 2016, at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born on October 3, 1952, in Greensburg and had been a Westport resident since 1984. John was employed by Lowe’s Pellets and Grain in Greensburg. He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting, golfing, collecting and following the Colts and Pacers. He was an avid history and military history buff. John also enjoyed and adored his grandson, Gavin.

He married Joyce A. Powers in Greensburg on August 20, 1977, and she survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Natalie K. (Lloyd M.) Stephen of Indianapolis; his son, Adam J. (Fiancée Hannah Watts) Whiteman of Indianapolis; his grandson, Gavin T. Stephen of Indianapolis; his sister, Wanda (Mike) Ruble of Greensburg; his brothers, Richard Filler of Kentucky, Brian (Tracey) Filler of Tennessee and Tim (Brandy) Filler of Shelbyville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty (Hersley) Yorn; his step-father, Richard Filler; and his sister, Beverly Stout.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 17, 2016, at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with military rites. Pastor Mike Bartlett will be officiating. The family will receive visitors from4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at the funeral home.
