Local man arrested on intoxication charge after vehicle hits mailbox

Columbus police arrested a local motorist accused of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and crashing his pickup truck into a mailbox.

Anthony L. Britt, 31, 5960 Sheridan Court, is accused of operating a vehicle while intoxicated — endangerment and operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol level of .08 to .14 percent, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Columbus Police Officer John Morphew was sent to investigate the accident in the 3400 block of North Talley Road at about 5 p.m. Tuesday and spoke with Britt, Harris said.

Britt said he swerved his truck off the road and hit the mailbox to avoid a collision with another vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road, Harris said. Britt failed sobriety exercises and provided a breath test sample of .123 percent, Harris said.

Britt was released from the Bartholomew County Jail after posting $7,500 bond, jail officials said.
