Brian’s picks – December 8

OK, I’m slightly partial — my wife performed in Dancers Studio’s “The Nutcracker” in the Arabian scene a number of years ago. But I would have loved the show anyway. Tchaikovsky’s music still puts magic on its toes, Susannah Lipinski’s costumes always are as incredible as the storyline, and Alma Wiley’s team of dancers regularly bring a quiet grace to their depiction of a Nutcracker that saves Christmas. Performances are slated at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 and 2:30 p.m. Dec. 18, Judson Erne Auditorium, 1400 25th St. in Columbus. Tickets: $15 in advance for adults, and $10 in advance for students. Information: 812-376-8080 or dancers-studio.org.

I’ve said it before in this space: the film, “White Christmas” features a script as senseless as sandals in a snowstorm. But, make no mistake, the movie obviously is a seasonal favorite and a wonderful vehicle for the iconic Bing Crosby tune. It shows along with the classic comedy “Christmas Vacation” beginning Dec. 9 for a week at YES Cinema, Fourth and Jackson streets. Information and showtimes: yescinema.org.
