Robert Wayne Burkman, 88, of Scipio, passed away December 5, 2016, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Hope.

Born August 22, 1928, in Decatur County, Indiana, Mr. Burkman was the son of Grover and Minnie May Bliton Burkman. He married Anna Mae Kemp on December 28, 1952, in North Vernon. She preceded him in death July 25, 2009.

Mr. Burkman attended Scipio schools and graduated from North Vernon High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1952. He was employed for 33 years with Cummins Engine Company in Columbus where he worked as an engine tester, retiring in 1983. He worked at Sears in Columbus for 10 years and at H&H Construction in Elizabethtown for 10 years. He was a minister at Blue Ridge Christian Union and Rays Crossing Christian Union, both in Shelby County, Norristown Christian Church in Norristown and Wilson Chapel in Jennings County. He enjoyed woodworking and playing piano and organ.

He is survived by his son, Eric Burkman of Scipio; daughters, Lori (David) Ammerman of Scipio and Jane (Mike) Riley Sr. of Columbus; grandchildren, Anna (Eric) Stevenson of Columbus, Shawn (Amanda) Burkman of Queensville, Erin (Brian) Biehl of Scipio, Jacob (Elizabeth) Riley of Carmel, Miriam (Hunter) Hall of Houston, Texas, Charity (Matthew) Brennan of Westport, Mike (Karen) Riley Jr. of Columbus and Jonathan (Crystal) Riley of North Vernon; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Minnie Burkman; his wife, Anna Mae Burkman; brothers, Harry, Leslie Paul, Glenn, Charles and Harold Burkman; and sisters, Lora Barringer, Ruth Jean Bannister and Lena Burkman.

A funeral service for Mr. Burkman will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2016, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon with the Rev. Tom Rust officiating. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Friday. Private burial will be at Vernon Cemetery.
