Republic best of its size in state newspaper contest

Staff Reports

INDIANAPOLIS — The Republic has been named the top daily newspaper of its size in the 2016 Hoosier State Press Association Foundation Better Newspaper Contest.

The Republic finished first in General Excellence, based on points accumulated by the newspaper in individual categories.

That honor was among 23 awards earned by The Republic news staff. The Republic competed in Division 5, for newspapers with paid circulation between 14,000 and 34,999.

When originally announcing contest results, press association officials made an error in assigning points in one of the categories, which changed General Excellence rankings for three newspapers including The Republic.

When points were recalculated, The Republic was No. 1 in its division.

The Republic staff won eight first-place awards, eight second-place awards, six third-place awards and one finalist designation. The contest period covered entries between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016.
