Bessie Marie Hopkins Hadley, 87, of Columbus, died at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Born in Lancaster, Kentucky, Oct. 7, 1929,Bessie was the daughter of Otis and Lora Jane Goins Hopkins. She married the Rev. Hubert Hadley Oct. 10, 1946, in Columbus, and he preceded her in death March 1, 2010.

Bessie had worked as a cook for BCSC at the State Street School cafeteria for many years. She also cooked for Midway Separate Baptist Church Bible School and was a longtime member of the Separate Baptist Church in Edinburgh. Bessie loved the Christmas season, being with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild. She was an avid Phipps Gospel Sing follower, enjoyed reading, playing the piano, singing all the time, feeding the birds and working in her strawberry patch. Her favorite pastime was sitting in the porch swing with Rev. Hadley.

Bessie is survived by her children, Kenneth (Charlotte) Hadley, Columbus, Bob (Linda) Hadley of Stedman, North Carolina, Larry (Brenda) Hadley, Clifford, Hubert (Mary) Hadley, North  Vernon, Timothy (Freda) Hadley, Pekin, Betty Denton, Sue Burton, Janet Hadley and Cindy (Tom) Ludwig, Columbus, Charlotte Hadley, Indianapolis and Patty (Lee) Jones, Orleans; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Howard Ray Hadley; brothers and sisters, George Hopkins, Otis Hopkins Jr., Loraine Quinn, Sally Croucher and Katherine Burton; and sons-in-law, Troy Burton and Jerry Denton.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Edinburgh Separate Baptist Church, 905 S. Main St., Edinburgh, with Rev. Mark Polston officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. Calling will be at the church from 4 to 8 p. m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service Monday.
