No prison time for former Columbus narcotics supervisor

COLUMBUS, Indiana — A former Columbus Police Department narcotics division supervisor who admits taking drugs from the department’s evidence room will not be going to prison.

Jeremy R. Coomes, 39, was given a nine-year sentence Wednesday in Bartholomew Circuit Court.  But the Columbus resident will spend the first year under house arrest or in a work-release program, Judge Stephen Heimann ordered.

Although the next five years will be served on probation, any infraction of conditions could result in Coomes being sent to prison for nine years, Heimann said.
