City police department hires Columbus native

Columbus native Skylar Berry is the newest member of the city’s police department.

He was sworn in by Mayor Jim Lienhoop during the Columbus Board of Public Works and Safety meeting Tuesday morning.

Berry is a Columbus North High School graduate and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Indiana University in December 2016.

While working toward his degree, Berry became a sworn police officer with the Indiana University Police Department and served as both a cadet and part-time police officer. He also worked for nearly four years as a corrections officer at the Bartholomew County Jail.

Berry will start his Columbus Police Department training on the city streets in January.
