Elizabeth L. “Betty” Smith, 74, of Flintwood Drive, passed away at 4:35 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Betty was born October 24, 1942, in Scottsville, Kentucky, the daughter of Herbert and Ellabelle “Blanche” Disman Shields. She married the Rev. Kennth R. Smith on December 17, 1956.

Betty was a charter member of Hope Community Church of God, where she was involved in many activities. She enjoyed fishing, traveling and camping with her husband, and was proud to have been a dispatcher for the East Columbus Volunteer Fire Department. To Betty, her family was the most important thing in life. She was always certain that everyone else was taken care of before taking care of herself.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Hancock officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to the service Thursday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Survivors include her son, Jeffery L. (Jason Weaver) Smith of Noblesville; daughters, Brenda S. (William Jr.) Lewis, Linda L. Meranda, Kimberly C. (fiancé Roger Hays) Smith, all of Columbus; grandchildren, Amanda Perry, Brandy McCurdy, Alesha Cravens, Monica Hays and Ashley (Jared Hopkins) Kelsay; eight great-grandchildren; and brothers, Frankie Shields and Jackie (Martha) Shields, both of Scottsville, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her husband on February 27, 2014; a daughter, Loretta R. Hays; a brother, Bandly Davis; and grandchildren, Rogers Hays II and Bridget Wall.
