One injured after truck, SUV collide

A driver involved in a crash that had a sport-utility vehicle vertical against a utility pole has been transferred to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, for treatment of serious injuries.

The accident happened at 8:33 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Washington Street and North National Road, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The force of the collision caused a 2009 Dodge Caliber driven by Anita M. Pope, 78, of Columbus, to land vertically up against a telephone pole next to Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping, 3230 N. National Road, Harris said.

Before landing on the pole, Pope’s car and a 2008 Dodge truck driven by Malcolm T. Burton, 49, of Columbus, collided in the intersection, Harris said.

Burton got out of his vehicle to check on Pope’s condition, witnesses said. Police called a medical helicopter because Pope was unconscious, but it was canceled and she was initially taken to Columbus Regional Hospital by ambulance.
