PROVIDENCE, R.I. — An off-duty Providence Fire official will be one of the first recipients of a new municipal medal that’s been commissioned by the City Council.
The Providence Journal reported Friday (http://bit.ly/2iQOsxi ) the new “seal of honor and heroism” is expected to be ready next month. Its production is being overseen by Olneyville artist Kiki Sciullo.
The Providence City Council announced last week the medal will recognize public servants’ extraordinary acts of bravery. The council voted in October to update the original municipal medal ordinance, which dated back to 1915.
Fire Lt. Robert McCollough was off duty in late December, driving down a city street when he noticed a house on fire. He stopped, entered the burning building without any equipment and pulled out a severely burned man.
The victim later died.
