AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine Right to Life is hosting its “Hands Around the Capitol Memorial” event.
Executive Director Teresa McCann-Tumidajski says Saturday’s event protesting the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion is “the largest pro-life gathering in the state.”
Roman Catholic Bishop Robert Deeley and Gov. Paul LePage were among expected participants at the demonstration, which included a ringing of the bell 44 times, once for each year since the Roe v Wade decision was issued on Jan. 22, 1973.
Planned Parenthood of Northern New England says restrictions on abortions must be resisted, and that it should be up to a woman with counsel from her health care provider, family and faith.
Spokeswoman Nicole Clegg said the majority of Americans “don’t want politicians inserting themselves in the personal decision making of women.”
