Charles C. Hurt, 82, of Columbus, formerly of Hope, died Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.

He retired from Cosco after 40 years and worked as a maintenance man for Clouse’s IGA in Hope. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Charles was a member of Hope First Baptist Church and the American Legion.

He enjoyed fishing and being outside. He was a good handyman and liked working with his hands. Charles loved being with his kids, and loved his grandkids and great-grandkids. He also enjoyed doing projects with his sons and sons-in-law.

Born on Sept. 22, 1934, in Esto, Kentucky, Charles was the son of Carl and Jennie Montgomery Hurt. He married Nelva June Voils on Jan. 29, 1955, in Jamestown, Kentucky, and she survives.

Other survivors include children, Steve Hurt and Larry Hurt, both of North Vernon and Leah Beth Fiorini and Melanie (Matt) Case, both of Columbus; grandchildren, Jon (Jennifer) Hurt, Robert Hurt, Natalie (Blake Trobaugh) Fiorini, Samantha (Matt) Wallace, Emily (Michael) Clark, all of Columbus, Annette (Matt) Bradbury of Olathe, Kansas, LaChelle Hurt of Denver, North Carolina and Jessica Hurt of Bloomington; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Bennie (Nancy) Hurt of Geneva; and sisters, Jerrie Dunbar and Dorlee Lane, both of Russell Springs, Kentucky.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ila Jean Stearns.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Norman Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Hope Moravian Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
