Collis L. Mayfield, 93, of Columbus, died Saturday, January 21, 2017, at his son’s residence. He was born on April 28, 1923, in Hawesville, Kentucky, to William Edgar Mayfield and Thelma (Lamar) Mayfield. He married Dora Lou White on May 2, 1942.

Collis was a Christian, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfatherand one of the few World War II Army veterans still alive. He was a member of the East Columbus United Methodist Church and past president of the Columbus Optimist Club.

Collis and his wife Dora had owned Mayfield Rental Center before Collis retired from Sears at the age of 85. He was an avid golfer, bowler and Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan.

Calling will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2017, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, January 27, at East Columbus United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Aigner officiating. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors provided by Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Collis is survived by a son, Collis G. (Becky) Mayfield of Columbus, Indiana; daughters, Jill (Bill) Spence of Houston, Texas, LuAnn (Dave) McDuell of Diamond Bar, California, and Debbie (Mark) Kalstrup of High Point, North Carolina; a sister, Mary Catt of Franklin, Indiana; grandchildren, Scott (Lori) Neal, Chris (Kris) Neal, Tracey (Doug) Warren, Lt. Col. Derek (Amy) Mayfield, Cory Spence, Kaley (Alan) Crane, Leslie Sinnock, Ryan Mayfield, Carly (Shawn) Gordon, Nicole (Mike) Gong, Jera (Branden) Fusi, Eric (Susan) Kalstrup and Brian Kalstrup; and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dora Mayfield on March 14, 2014; a son, David Mayfield; a daughter, Pat Neal; and a brother, Charles Mayfield.
