North senior signs letter of intent to attend Cedarville (Ohio)

A knee injury that sidelined her last summer prevented college basketball programs from seeing Ashlyn Huffman during one of the prime recruiting periods.

Schools have been able to see the Columbus North senior during this high school season, however, and earlier this week, she made the decision to attend Cedarville (Ohio) University.

“I really enjoyed the players and coaches during my visit, and they told me they really needed a point guard,” Huffman said. “They said they liked what they saw, and they said I would have a chance to play early.”

Cedarville began recruiting Huffman in November and saw her play in December. She visited the NCAA Division II school earlier this month and was offered a scholarship.

The Yellow Jackets are 9-8 this season under first-year coach Kari Hoffman.

“I really like how they play,” Huffman said. “They push the ball when they can, and there is a lot of movement and freedom in the offense.”

The 5-foot-5 Huffman is a three-time All-Conference Indiana selection. She played her first two years of high school at Franklin Central before transferring to North.

Last year, Huffman averaged 9.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.3 steals in helping lead the Bull Dogs to a 27-2 record and a Class 4A state runner-up finish in earning an Indiana Junior All-Star selection. She is averaging 8.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals in 16 games this season since returning to the court in early December.

“Last year as a junior, she was a critical piece to our overall success, and it’s unfortunate that she was injured and couldn’t play in the climax game for us,” North coach Pat McKee said. “But she’s came back and had a good senior year for us.”

Huffman is the third North senior to announce plans to play in college, joining Maliah Howard-Bass (Ball State) and Imani Guy (Southern Indiana). While Howard-Bass and Guy both signed national letters-of-intent during the early singing period in November, Huffman will have to wait for the spring signing period, which begins April 12.

At Cedarville, Huffman plans to major in biology and pre-med in hopes of becoming a doctor.
