A home in the 500 block of 16th Street was heavily damaged by fire at about 9 p.m. Monday.
Columbus firefighters were called to 517 16th St. after a 14-year-old discovered a fire in a bedroom and called 911, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire visible through a window in the home and learned the teenager was safe at a neighbor’s house. The fire was under control in about five minutes, Wilson said.
Fire investigators learned the teen’s mother had briefly left the home to run an errand when the fire occurred, Wilson said. The fire’s cause remains undetermined and no injuries were reported.
Damage to the rental home was estimated at $30,000 with an additional $10,000 damage to the contents, Wilson said. The Salvation Army provided emergency shelter for the family. Firefighters did not locate any working smoke alarms in the home.
