Underage drinking contributed to a Columbus man’s auto accident, police said.
Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department deputies Nate Nichols and Dane Duke responded to an accident near the intersection of county roads 450S and 400W at about 2:23 a.m. Sunday.
Upon arrival, the driver — identified as Evan Wischmeier, 20, 3000 W. County Road 200S — was speaking with emergency medical services. After receiving medical release, Wischmeier told deputies that he fell asleep while driving and ran off the roadway, rolling down an embankment.
Wischmeier was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary arrest charges of:
- Operating a vehicle while intoxicated
- Illegal consumption
- Possession of a controlled substance
He was released from jail on a $2,500 bond.
