Sara Frances Gommel, 88, of Columbus, died at 1:10 p.m. Sunday, February 19, 2017, at Silver Oaks Health Campus, surrounded by family.

Born in Bartholomew County on July 22, 1928, Sara was the daughter of William Oddy and Lota Monzel Kirts Bright. As a child, Sara attended the Mt. Liberty Baptist Church in Gnawbone and graduated from Brown County High School. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had worked for J. C. Penney for a while in catalogue sales.

She married Raymond M. Gommel on June 27, 1948, in Columbus. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1996. Sara enjoyed golf, bowling and NASCAR. She was an avid follower of Tony Stewart and was a member of his fan club.

Sara is survived by her children, Diana (Allan) Hunter of Clifford and Alan (Cindy) Gommel of Columbus; grandchildren, Jeremy (Sabrina) Hunter of Clifford, Tabitha Salati of Fishers and Amanda (Eric) Harper of Hope; great-grandchildren, Waylon and Jovie Harper of Hope, Parker, Raya and Hadleigh Salati of Fishers and Teagan Hunter of Clifford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and siblings, Aeretta Stine, James Oakley Bright, Loren Mark Bright and Billy Gene Bright.

There will be a funeral service for Sara at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017, at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street with Pastor Todd Riordan officiating. Burial will follow in Garland Brook Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials for Sara may be sent to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or Faith Lutheran Church.
