Hazardous-materials cleanup starts Monday

NORTH VERNON — The Indiana Department of Transportation will begin removing contaminants at a waste site along U.S. Highway 50 near Buckeye Street beginning next week.

The work is expected to start Monday, focusing on discarded drums of lead paint, chromium, trichloroethylene, glass and debris. INDOT officials said materials from two areas about an acre in size along U.S. Highway 50 will be removed from depths to 15 feet by contracted hazardous-materials professionals. The material then will be transported to a specialty landfill in eastern Michigan.

INDOT officials said they expect that trucks will haul material from the site for about 16 days. Air and water will be sampled continually while the material is being removed, INDOT officials said.

The area will then be capped with clay and rimmed with monitoring wells, INDOT officials said.
